In recent years, Amélie Nothomb has become one of the rising stars of literature in French, with the publication of a new novel each year. Born in Japan in 1967, the daughter of a diplomat, she spent part of her childhood in Asia before returning to Belgium, her country of origin, at the age of seventeen. But Amélie felt ill at ease in the Western world. She shut herself away and devoted herself to writing. Her career began in 1992 with Hygiène de l’assassin [Assassin’s Hygiene] and reached its peak in 1999 with Stupeur et tremblements [Fear and Trembling], which sold almost 450,000 copies and won France’s Grand Prix de l’Académie Française, before being adapted for the cinema by Alain Corneau in 2003. Her books have since been translated into twenty-three languages.
Robert des noms propres [Robert’s Dictionary of Proper Names] was published in October 2002 and has since topped the best-seller lists. It tells the story of Plectrude, a child born in prison to a mother who has killed her husband after an argument about what to call their expected child. "Wanting to call your child Tanguy or Joëlle is to offer them a world of mediocrity, with its horizons already limited. But I want my baby to have infinity within her reach. I do not want my child to feel limited by anything, I want her name to suggest to her an exceptional destiny." Plectrude’s mother ends up committing suicide in her cell.
Brought up by her uncle and aunt, Plectrude is a beautiful child, uninhibited and easy-going, a bit of a dunce at school but a prodigy when it comes to dance. In adolescence, she breaks her knee and her dream of one day becoming a famous ballet star at the Opera is shattered. Learning the truth about the circumstances of her birth, she decides to repeat her mother’s tragic fate. She is saved by the man she loves, a musician who then becomes the music composer for her songs.

In reality, Amélie Nothomb is a close friend of the Belgian female vocalist Robert and was even involved in the writing of her album Celle qui tue [She who kills].
Tackling themes as varied as beauty, the sense of tragedy, death, admiration, passion, guilt, anorexia and the acceptance of self, the author has thus moved out of the realm of fiction and entered the real world to help launch her friend’s career and hint at the links that bind them together.

'Het mooie is altijd bizar,' verklaarde Nothomb in de coulissen van een of andere miss-verkiezing. Het hoeft dan ook niet te verwonderen dat haar proza niet als een man, maar als een horde kobolden op de lezer af komt. 'Plectrude', haar elfde roman, heeft gelukkig een typisch Nothomb-begin: op amper tien bladzijden vermoordt een vrouw haar man (omdat hij haar ongeboren kind een alledaagse naam wil geven), bevalt ze in de cel van een dochter, en verhangt ze zich met een strop van beddengoed - maar niet zonder dochterlief met de naam Plectrude te zegenen: 'De eerste lettergreep van Plectrude doet aan een borstpantser denken, dat ruwe einde vormt als het ware een schild. Die naam is een talisman.' Plectrude is een personage-geworden pleidooi voor excentriciteit. (bv - HUMO)
De boeken van Nothomb lezen als een trein met fascinerende personages, soms op het bizarre af. Vroeger las ik hoofdzakelijk thrillers. Het is dankzij auteurs als Nothomb, Murakami, Auster en Irving dat ik de thrillers laat voor wat ze zijn. Ik wil alles verorberen van deze schrijvers, zo vlug mogelijk. Ik weet het, ik ben gulzig.
