EDWARD ELGAR - NIMROD

Edward Elgar werd geboren op 2 juni 1857. Zijn vader, een pianostemmer uit Dover, verhuisde kort na zijn huwelijk naar Broadteath in Worcester. Daar startte zijn vader een muziekwinkel, en de hele familie stak er af en toe een handje toe. Zo kreeg de jonge Edward de gelegenheid om met muziek in contact te komen. Zijn vader stuurde hem naar een advocatenkantoor om er een stage te doen, want hij was van mening dat een muziekcarrière voor zijn zoon niets zou zijn.
Toch verdiepte Edward zich verder in de harmonie, contrapunt, en muziektheorie. Daarbij bestudeerde hij allerlei partituren. Enkele jaren later stichtte hij, samen met zijn broer, een blaaskwintet op. Hij reisde dikwijls naar Londen om er concerten bij te wonen.

In 1878 werd Elgar benoemd tot leider van het personeelsorkest van de psychiatrische inrichting, en nam daarnaast een baan als leraar in Malvern. Hij begon ook zijn composities op te sturen naar uitgevers en dirigenten, maar ze werden dikwijls afgewezen, niet omdat ze slecht waren, maar omdat hij uit de provincie kwam en bovendien katholiek was.

In 1889 trouwde hij met één van zijn leerlingen, Alice Roberts en verhuisde naar Londen. Zij moedigde hem aan om door te gaan met componeren. Niet zonder resultaat, want in 1890 werd zijn ouverture ‘Froissart’ geaccepteerd voor het Three Choirs Festival. In Londen kende hij echter geen enkel succes, zodat hij terug naar Worcester verhuisde. (lees meer)

SHELBY LYNNE - REVELATION ROAD

Shelby Lynne was destined to be a singer. Born a singer. She was raised in rural Alabama by musical parents who stressed individuality and the importance of standing apart from others. A terrible student, but avid reader, she loved the written lyric and a beautiful melody. Around the house she was surrounded by country music from the past, Hank Williams, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings, as well as old 45′s that belonged to her parents stacked high with most all Everly Brothers, Beatles, Elvis. It was the old pop music that really turned her soul on. The harmonies that came so naturally to her from such an early age stemmed from her mother, a naturally gifted singer, who guided the diamond in the rough talent on rides to school on freezing Alabama mornings with her younger sister Allison. They sang three part harmonies to pass the time, which brought the threesome so close in life, and in music. The Mills Brothers, Ink Spots, Kay Starr, Everly’s and anything that needed a harmony – this was the car in which to find it. (read more)

LYKKE LI - I FOLLOW RIVERS

Stockholm, Sweden’s Lykke Li is set to release her highly-anticipated sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes, on her label LL Recordings on March 1st, 2011. Produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn & John and recorded in Stockholm, Wounded Rhymes is the follow up to Lykke Li’s critically-acclaimed debut, Youth Novels.Lykke Li Zachrisson was born in 1986, the middle child to a photographer mother and a musician father. Her mother giving birth to her standing up and without anaesthesia was a manifestation of the revolutionary hospital’s credo – “Being born on a woman’s terms” and possibly the first confrontation with womankind to found Lykke Li’s struggle with the concept of belonging. The Zachrissons were the family that wouldn’t sit still, moving from Sweden to New Zealand, to Portugal where they settled in a mountain village to escape radiation in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. A compliant rebel child whose first steps were taken barefoot on sharp pebbles to the sound of peacocks and thunder, spending her winters in India, Nepal and Morocco, her school years in 11 different establishments, Lykke soon turned to scribbling poetry and dancing, not out of interest but out of necessity. When the family moved back to Sweden several years later, the now nine year old was already a wanderer by nature, restless and ancient at heart. (read more)

GABRIEL FAURÉ - PAUL CÉZANNE

Gabriel Fauré werd op 12 maart 1845 in Pamiers geboren als zesde en jongste kind uit een niet zo bijster muzikaal gezin. Op negenjarige leeftijd echter werd hij naar de beroemde kerkmuziekschool van Niedermeyer gestuurd, en daar kreeg hij ook les van Saint-Saëns. Hij bleef in dit internaat tot zijn twintigste, en de muzikale atmosfeer van dit instituut heeft een duidelijke stempel gedrukt op de aard en de stijl van zijn werken.
Hij wordt er leraar, en daarnaast kerkorganist aan de Madeleine-kerk. Dezelfde functie bekleedt hij ook een tijdje te Rennes en aan de Notre-Dame de Clignancourt. In 1883 huwt hij, en in 1896 wordt hij benoemd tot leraar compositie aan het Parijse Conservatorium, met leerlingen als Ravel, Schmitt en Koechlin. In 1905 wordt hij er directeur, wat hij blijft tot 1920. Dan moet hij die functie neerleggen wegens een onherroepelijk voortschrijdende doofheid. Toch kan hij nog meesterwerken blijven componeren, en hij blijft muziekmedewerker van "Le Figaro". Hij sterft in Parijs op 4 november 1924.

Fauré was de enige componist met naam in Frankrijk die nooit een officiële conservatoriumopleiding kreeg, en niet meedong naar de "Prix de Rome". (Componisten.net)

Paul Cézanne is een schilder, die een enorme invloed heeft gehad op de twintigste eeuwse schilderkunst. Picasso werkte diens stijl verder uit tot het kubisme, Matisse bewonderde vooral zijn kleurgebruik. Cézanne wordt vaak gezien als de vader van de Moderne Kunst. In zijn eigen tijd was hij echter een buitenstaander en werd vaak onbegrepen.

Cézanne werd geboren op 19 januarie 1839 in Aix-en-Provence in Zuid-Frankrijk. Hij was de zoon van een rijke bankier. Al jong was hij geïnteresseerd in kunst en in 1861 vertrok hij naar Parijs na veel discussies met zijn vader over zijn liefde voor de schilderkunst. Cézanne voegde zich daar bij zijn vriend, de schrijver Zola. Al snel werd hij aangetrokken door de meer radicale schilders Delacroix en Courbet en ook door Manet. Na zes maanden gin Cézanne teleurgesteld terug naar huis. Na een jaar echter besloot hij opnieuw de schilderkunst in Parijs een kans te geven. (lees meer)

At age 76, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. Don't look for him in some kind of semi-retirement; look for him out on the road, playing for people, popping up in a myriad of T.V. commercials, or laying down tracks for his next album. B.B. Ottorino Respighi was born on July 9, 1879, in Bologna, Italy. He studied music with Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg. He’s known for introducing Russian sound to Italian music. In addition to composting suites, he composed operas such as Belfagor and La fiamma. His wife, Elsa Olivieri-Sangiacomo Respighi, was also his pupil, a composer and a singer of Operas. He died on April 18, 1936, in Rome. (read more)

THE JOLLY BOYS - REHAB

For nearly sixty years, the Jolly Boys have been integral to the fabric of Port Antonio’s musical landscape and cultural heritage. Masters of mento, one of Jamaica’s original musics, this band has rocked innumerable private soirées, charmed the traveling elite and toured the world, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who has heard them. Their new album, Great Expectation, introduces a new sound and direction, making them more unforgettable than they have ever been.

The Jolly Boys quickly rose to local prominence in the 1950s as the house band for the Rat Pack’s Jamaica chapter, chaired by the swashbuckling enfant terrible, Errol Flynn. Singing songs of double entendre and ribaldry to those in search of escape and excess, the group served as Port Antonio’s go-to band for thirty years. Being “discovered” by a new generation of world music aficionados in the late 1980s meant that the Jolly Boys could take their musical party on the road. Several album, dozens of countries and thirty years since, the Jolly Boys have become the most recognizable mento band in the world.

Now, the Jolly Boys are back, reinvigorated with a revolutionary new sound. In early 2009, Jon Baker, founder of Gee Street Records and one-time leader of the A&R team at Island Records in NYC, held a recording session at Geejam studios to capture some of the Jolly Boys vintage material. He was looking for the rebel mento–the punk rock of its day–where singers sang frankly about sex and wrote biting commentary about relevant social issues. The Jolly Boys delivered, but it led to a fresh creative idea: why not dip into the rock repertory, take the songs that resonate with mento’s raucous history and give them a different vibe? Baker, together with his long term friend and creative partner Mark Jones from Wall of Sound, worked together and chose tracks from artists like the Clash, the Stooges, the Stranglers and Amy Winehouse. They fit the mento vibe so naturally that work on the new project began immediately. (read more)

I'M A FOOL TO WANT YOU - BILLIE HOLIDAY

Billie Holiday was the daughter of Clarence Holiday. Her early life is obscure, as the account given in her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues, is self-serving and inaccurate. Her father abandoned the family early and refused to acknowledge his daughter until after her first success. At some point in her childhood, her mother moved to New York, leaving her in the care of her relatives who, according to Holiday, mistreated her. She did menial work, had little schooling, and in 1928 went to New York to join her mother. According to her own story, she was recruited for a brothel and was eventually jailed briefly for prostitution. At some point after 1930, she began singing at a small club in Brooklyn, and in a year or so moved to Pods' and Jerry's, a Harlem club well known to jazz enthusiasts. In 1933, she was working in another Harlem club, Monette's, where she was discovered by the producer and talent scout John Hammond. Hammond immediately arranged three recording sessions for her with Benny Goodman and found engagements for her in New York clubs. In 1935, he began recording her regularly, usually under the direction of Teddy Wilson, with studio bands that included many of the finest jazz musicians of the day. These recordings, made between 1935 and 1942, constitute a major body of jazz music; many include work by Lester Young, with whom Holiday had particular empathy. Though aimed mainly at the black jukebox audience, the recordings caught the attention of musicians throughout America and soon other singers were working in Holiday's light, rhythmic manner. STRANGE WEATHER - MARIANNE FAITHFULL

De legendarische Marianne Faithfull, nu nog meer dan ooit geliefd als chansonière. Haar stem is een uitzonderlijk instrument. Dat weten we al sinds die fenomenale comeback cd van 81 met ondermeer 'The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan'. Weg was het tienersterretje dat alles deelde met The Rolling Stones, ook hits als 'As Tears Go By'. In de plaats daarvan staat hier voortaan een wreed wijze vrouw die geleefd heeft.

En dat hoor je, zoals nu ook weer in de aangrijpende 'Easy Come, Easy Go' cd (op het Naïve label). Covers van Dolly Parton, Duke Ellington, Brian Eno, Randy Newman, Merle Haggard... En op cd eveneens medewerking van Antony, Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Teddy Thompson, Sean Lennon, Keith Richards, en vooral producer Hal Willner (ook bekend van zijn Strange Weather productie met mevrouw Faithfull en zijn Kurt Weill project). BLACK DUB: SUPERGROEP ROND DANIEL LANOIS

Met Black Dub begint Daniel Lanois aan een nieuwe fase in zijn opmerkelijke muzikale odyssee. Met enkele trouwe vrienden én met zangeres Trixie Whitley.

Na zijn productiewerk voor onder anderen Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris en Neil Young en een handvol gewaardeerde soloplaten, duikt Daniel Lanois onder in wat nu al een supergroep wordt genoemd.

Black Dub bestaat in hoofdzaak uit muzikanten met wie de Canadees al jaren samenspeelt en die gepokt en gemazeld zijn in de scene rond New Orleans: bassist Daryl Johnson en meesterdrummer Brian Blade. Dé ontdekking van de groep is echter de Belgisch-Amerikaanse zangeres Trixie Whitley, een jongedame die bij haar geboorte al genetisch gedetermineerd leek om muzikale paden in te slaan. Tenslotte is ze de dochter van de in 2005 overleden bluesgitarist Chris Whitley en het nichtje van dEUS-bassist Alan Gevaert. Ze was amper twaalf toen ze met haar vader op het podium al ‘Automatic’ stond te zingen en voelt zich allerminst geïntimideerd door de topmuzikanten die haar tegenwoordig omringen. Lanois heeft overigens met zorg de omstandigheden geschapen waarin ze haar stem optimaal kan ontplooien.

Lonken naar Jamaica

Eigenlijk heeft Black Dub een lange incubatieperiode achter de rug. De band was vorig jaar al in de Brusselse AB te zien en sindsdien circuleerden op het internet regelmatig audiobestanden en videobeelden die de verwachtingen voor zijn titelloze debuut-cd hielpen aan te scherpen. De release werd echter vertraagd, omdat Daniel Lanois enkele maanden geleden het slachtoffer werd van een zwaar motorongeluk dat hem bijna het leven kostte. De meeste tracks zijn live ingeblikt, niet zelden in één take, waardoor de spontaneïteit van het moment goed bewaard is gebleven.

De groepsnaam verwijst naar Lanois’ voorliefde voor Jamaïcaanse muziek, een invloed die doorklinkt in de wiegende reggaebeat van ‘Silverado’ en het dubby basspel van Johnson in ‘I Believe in You’. Dit laatste werpt zich, dank zij de voorvoelde zangpartij van la Whitley, meteen op als een van onze favorieten. ‘Ring the Alarm’ is dan weer gebaseerd op een Caraïbisch deuntje van songwriter en producer Winston Riley, maar wordt te lang uitgesponnen en klinkt zo banaal dat we blij zijn dat een pientere geest de skiptoets heeft uitgevonden.

Roots-smeltkroes

Op één uitzondering na schreef Daniel Lanois al het materiaal en zoals wel vaker het geval is op zijn platen is het resultaat een pittige smeltkroes van Amerikaanse rootsgenres. ‘Nomad’, waarin de stem van Trixie Whitley zich sensueel tegen de zijne aanschurkt, klinkt bijvoorbeeld als midtempo soul in de geest van Curtis Mayfield. Het pompende ‘Last Time’, geïnspireerd door een oud nummer van The Staple Singers, staat kniehoog in de swamps van Louisiana, ‘Sing’ verraadt -weliswaar flauwe- gospelinvloeden en het enkel door Lanois gezongen, in een laid-backsfeer ondergedompelde ‘Canaan’ is spirituele folk van het type dat destijds perfect op zijn cd ‘Shine’ zou hebben gepast.

Whitley zingt even rauw als bezield, niet alleen in duet met haar mentor (zie het smachtende ‘Love Lives’), maar ook wanneer ze de microfoon helemaal voor zichzelf heeft (de pakkende rhythm & bluesballad ‘Surely’). Andere hoogtepunten zijn de twee instrumentals, ‘Slow Baby’ en ‘Sirens’, waarin het geïnspireerde, sierlijk uitwaaierende gitaarspel van Daniel Lanois centraal staat. Ook het soepele, fantasierijke drumwerk van Brian Blade is de hele plaat lang een belevenis. Vanaf de eerste noot voel je dat de muzikanten helemaal op elkaars golflengte zitten.

‘Black Dub’ is dus een rijke, gevarieerde en overwegend geslaagde plaat, waarop het met allerlei geluidseffecten versierde geluidsdecor van Lanois voor de coherentie zorgt. En ook al had de productie af en toe iets soberder gemogen, Trixie Whitley had zich wellicht geen betere carrièrestart kunnen dromen. (Cobra.be)

RICHARD HAWLEY - OPEN UP YOUR DOOR

Richard was born on 17/1/1967 in Sheffield UK to Dave and Lyn Hawley. Dave had been a well known Sheffield musician in the 1960’s playing guitar for his own Dave Hawley Combo and The Black Cats, as well as numerous others. He would often put ‘pick up’ bands together for touring US musicians and would end up playing with the fearsome talents of people like Little Walter or John Lee Hooker. Lyn was also a singer on the club circuit with her sister Jean White. They sang (amongst others) Everly Brothers covers or rock n roll hits of the day. Meanwhile Richards uncle Frank White was carving out a name for himself locally as one of the best guitarists the city had seen, along with Dave. Frank is remembered for his twin necked guitar which he had long before Jimmy Page became synonymous with the instrument in Led Zeppelin. (read more)

Cyndi Lauper - Romance In The Dark - Memphis Blues

The blues, like the novel, is always dead or dying, according to someone, somewhere. But somehow, time and again, both these old forms find a way to resurrect themselves. Still, if you were asked to finish a sentence that begins "The next great blues album will be the work of [your candidate here]," it would be pretty long odds that your answer would be "Cyndi Lauper."

Lauper started out in the '80s as a pop star with that self-titled album where it seemed like every song was a hit, and she’s been a creature of pop ever since. Nonetheless, here she is with Memphis Blues, and if there’s been a better blues album this year, it’s a well-kept secret.

Hard-core blues fans have every right to be suspicious of high-profile interlopers who breeze in and, with no credentials or background, lay claim to territory where excellent musicians have been toiling for years with little or no recognition. But life isn’t fair, and sometimes these interlopers deserve a listen. Maria Muldaur cut an acoustic blues album a few years ago that set the standard for such invasions, but Lauper gives that earlier album some serious competition. (read more)

Editors - No Sound But The Wind (Live at Rock Werchter 2010)

The four members of EDITORS are the first to admit that they are not from the rock ‘n’ roll centres of the UK. Vocalist Tom Smith is from Stroud, guitarist Chris Urbanowicz is from Nottingham whilst drummer Ed Lay is from Ipswich and bass player Russell Leetch the only near Brummie, hails from Solihull. It may be this geographical grounding that leads the band to suggest that “rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t really follow us around” but recent events have suggested that this pattern is changing. Things were set in motion when Ed became the last member on board a previous incarnation of the band and EDITORS were born. Having founded the band at University in Stafford, on graduation the four relocated to Birmingham as it was both the nearest big city and the home of their management. (read more)
